Child sexual exploitation (CSE) is when someone takes advantage of a child or young person sexually by giving the illusion of love and care, or by giving them gifts, food, drugs, alcohol, money or accommodation. They may have power over them and use threats or violence so that they can get them to perform sexual acts for them or for others.
Criminals sometimes use vapes as bait to groom and coerce young people into illegal activities or sexual favours. The high demand for vapes among young people makes them vulnerable to this form of abuse.
CSE is a type of child abuse that may seem like a normal friendship or relationship at the beginning, but a young person might be persuaded to do sexual things in return for something (e.g to prove their love, pay for the things given or financial gain) with the abuser or their friends or associates.
The young person is often tricked into believing they are in a loving and consensual relationship and made to feel good about themselves. This is called grooming. They may trust their abuser and not understand that they're being abused, thereby appearing to be consensual in the activity. It can also involve violence, coercion and intimidation, with threats of physical harm or humiliation. Intrafamilial sexual abuse – abuse that exists within a family or the same household, behind closed doors – can occur.
Sextortion and peer-to-peer sharing of indecent images (sexting) are other types of CSE that can present a danger to young people, watch the video below to understand more:
